Combustion Turbine Facilities

ROCK SPRINGS GENERATION FACILITY, CECIL COUNTY, MARYLAND

  • To offset the impact of Rock Spring’s construction on the environment, we reforested 50 acres of land in two Maryland state parks in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Forestry.
  • In Cecil County, we funded the purchase of a Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation (MALPF) easement of 100 acres in the same magisterial district as the Rock Springs facility.
  • To avoid any chance of heavy groundwater use, we built ponds to capture storm water for use as process water. We also paid for a study by an independent third-party. The findings? Little to no impact on water resources.
  • We consulted community leaders and the Nature Conservancy on the design of a visual screen for the Rock Springs facility before we built a buffer area of earthen berms and over 500 native trees and shrubs.
  • Rock Springs uses recycled and safe-tested water from the facility’s evaporative coolers to irrigate grassy and visual screen areas.
  • The Rock Springs recycling program includes light bulbs, batteries, ink cartridges, aluminum cans and other reusable waste byproduct materials.

Louisa Power Station, Louisa County, Virginia and Marsh Run Power Station, Faquier County, Virginia

  • We donated materials and funds to enable local school students to build a number of blue bird and wood duck houses for station property. Extra birdhouses were located throughout the community.
  • Visual screening comprised of approximately 550 native trees and shrubs was installed at the Marsh Run Power Station. For further screening, we had the Virginia Department of Forestry plant approximately six acres of pine seedlings on an unused portion of station property.
  • For a Boy Scout’s Eagle Scout project, we donated materials and funds to build a short, interpretative trail through the woods along Marsh Run as an educational resource for local students and adults alike.
  • We placed station-owned property not needed for operations into a land preservation easement for perpetuity.
  • To address community concerns about groundwater use, we engineered a system to use recycled wastewater from a nearby wastewater treatment plant for process water, which we then send back to the treatment plant.
  • For a visual screen between the facility and an adjacent roadway, we planted 179 loblolly pines. Additionally, we had the Virginia Forestry Department plant 6 acres of pine seedlings on site to further enhance the screening efforts and as a land management feature for an unused portion of the property.
