ODEC currently buys the output of two landfill gas-to-energy projects, one in Sussex County, Delaware and another in Worcester County, Maryland. Both projects produce electricity by collecting naturally occurring methane, a byproduct of decomposing waste, and burning it to power an electric generator. The Worcester County project went into commercial operation in 2008. It generates two megawatts of capacity. The Sussex County project generates one megawatt of capacity. Using methane from landfills not only creates electricity from a renewable fuel source, it reduces the net emissions of greenhouse gasses from the landfill.
